Forget the grand promises about AI changing civilization. Here are five ordinary chores it does well right now, each with the exact words to type. Try one this week and see.
1. The dinner rut
Type: “Here is what is in my fridge: [list it]. Give me three simple dinner ideas using mostly these ingredients.” You get a plan instead of staring into the cold. Ask for a grocery list covering the missing bits while it is at it.
2. The email you keep postponing
Type: “Help me write a short, polite email telling my landlord the dishwasher still leaks and the last repair did not fix it.” Read the draft, change what does not sound like you, send it. Two minutes instead of two weeks of guilt.
3. The confusing letter
Insurance, benefits, the county. Type: “Explain this letter in plain English and tell me if I need to do anything,” then paste the letter. Remove your account numbers first; the helper does not need them to explain the words.
4. The trip that needs a plan
Type: “We are driving to Denver for three days with a nine year old. Build a simple day-by-day plan with one main thing per day and cheap food ideas.” Then argue with it. Arguing with a draft is far easier than starting from nothing.
5. The comparison you keep putting off
New phone plan, streaming services, insurance quotes. Type: “Compare these two options for a person who mostly cares about [price, simplicity, whatever you care about],” and paste the details. The differences come back laid out where you can actually read them.
The pattern worth noticing
Every one of these is the same move: tell it the job, give it the material, read the result before you use it. That is the whole skill, and it gets comfortable fast.
