It arrives while you are busy: “Your package could not be delivered. Confirm your address to avoid return.” And because you did order something on Tuesday, your thumb hovers. This is one of the most common scams in America right now, and it is beatable in five seconds.
The five-second check
Do not read the message like a customer. Read it like a bouncer. Ask one question: is this message asking me to tap a link or pay a small fee? If yes, it is almost certainly a scam. Real carriers leave a note, redeliver, or hold packages at the depot. They do not text strangers asking for two dollars.
Why it works on smart people
The scam does not need you to be foolish. It needs you to be busy and expecting a package, which is most of us, most of the time. The message manufactures a small urgency, and urgency is the favorite tool of every scammer. The moment you feel rushed by a message is the moment to slow down.
What to do instead
If you are genuinely expecting a delivery, go to the carrier app or website by typing it yourself, or use the tracking link from your original order confirmation. Never the link in the text. If the message was a scam, delete and report it: on iPhone tap Report Junk; on Android, block and report spam.
If you already tapped
Tapping alone rarely causes damage. Entering information does. If you typed a card number, call your bank and have the card replaced; it is a ten-minute call. Then change your password anywhere you reused it. No shame in it, these messages fool people who work in technology for a living.
